My computer for 2012

I just thought it was time for a new one since the new X79 chipset and Sandy Bridge E processors using the new LGA2011 socket were coming out.

//julie is the name of another computer on my LAN. Right now it's an Intel i7 950 3.06GHz cpu on a GigaByte GA-X58A-UD3R motherboard and it's going to be my Mother's new computer when this is all done.

Of course, no computer build goes completely problem free...

I found that the MSI N560GTX-Ti on the GA-X79-UD7 are not such a good fit. The heatsink on the video card hits the chipset heatsink on the motherboard. It's a very tight fit to get the card latched into the PCI slot. One or both the manufacturers didn't consider industry standard full length video cards and allow room for them to fit.

You can see my solution in that last picture, I just took a dremel and removed some of the aluminum hanging down off the video card. Of course I had to take the video card completely apart to do this. I think I may have voided the warranty.

First time I powered it up, got into BIOS no problem. Went to PC Health Status to verify CPU was being cooled. 3.7GHz and 36C.

Looked around in BIOS a while… checked CPU temp a few times,always 36/37C.
Switched Intel SATA controller to RAID and hit Save and Exit…

Then nothing.

The power switch would make the lights flash and fans kick over and that's it. I reset CMOS, once with the button on the back and once with ajumper and removing the battery. Then I tried Gigabyte supports suggestion of leaving power/battery unhooked and a jumper on the Clr_Cmos pins overnight.

That would clear CMOS and let me get into BIOS again, but a reboot to save any changes made would result in the same dead board again.

I returned it and bought a new one.

I wasn't sure how the whole RMA thing was going to work so I marked the box and the motherboard to make sure I didn't get the same dead board sent back to me. I've actually heard of that happening with ASUS ... never with newegg. There are serial numbers on the board and the box but if I bought a new part that had a mark on it like this I'm pretty sure I would bring it up with the people that sold it to me.

On newegg.com's suggestion I changed the RMA to a return and just bought a new motherboard. That gets the new board here before the fried one even gets back to them. newegg.com is pretty cool!
